How to Style Your Powder Room Effectively
Generally, a powder room is also known as a half bath or guest bath. It only has two of the four main concepts that a bathroom typically should have, usually a toilet and basin. It does not have any provisions for a bath or shower in it.
These small rooms date back to the 1700s and originally only appeared in wealthy estates. Their main purpose was to provide a place to powder one’s wig and nose, hence the name powder room.
A powder room can be the perfect addition to any home either big or small. As the trend with powder rooms is heading towards a maximalism trend, we are seeing wallpaper, vibrant colours and more personality injected into these tiny rooms.
As a powder room includes a basin which is usually small, you need to decide what type and finish of tapware to use. In the case of a powder room, the best option would be to use a basin mixer that sits on top of the basin, therefore, reducing the space required. The basin itself is usually a half size to allow for hand washing only. As trends lean towards coloured basins in materials such as concrete and coloured ceramic this allows you to create a whimsical feel for your powder room. You will also need a hand towel holder for your hand towel. This could be a bar or ring shape however don’t discount the use of a robe hook as a hand towel holder. This is a suitable option if the space is minimal. The powder room can be an individual space where your creativity can be expressed. One way to maintain the flow of the design aesthetic would be to use the same tapware throughout the home. This could be in the same range ie. pin lever handles or maintaining the same coloured finish throughout the home. Either way, you can still create a free-flowing feel within the wet areas of the house. Barben’s range of tapware and accessories includes six coloured finishes that suit any design palette.
Here are some design tips to help you create the perfect powder room:
- Use an arched mirror which borrows light from surrounding areas and visibly increases the space.
- Paint the entire room in a deep, rich colour – ceiling included.
- Painting the wall behind the vanity in a high gloss, bold shade.
- Adding colourful accents like towels and art in bright tones.
Finish off your powder room with a few cosy touches. Plush towels and scented soaps go a long way—so do plants, candles, and other decorative accents. And you can never go wrong with a woven basket for your guests to discard used towels in.
The powder room may be the smallest space in the home however that doesn’t mean it should lack the style and attention to detail as the rest of the house.
